National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP)

The NRGP is South Africa's primary gambling support service, funded by the gambling industry and overseen by the National Gambling Board. Their services are completely free and confidential.

  • Toll-free helpline: 0800 006 008 (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
  • WhatsApp: 076 675 0710
  • Website: responsiblegambling.co.za

The NRGP offers telephone counselling, face-to-face counselling at treatment centres across the country, and a self-exclusion programme that allows you to ban yourself from all licensed gambling venues and online platforms in South Africa.

Signs That Gambling Has Become a Problem

Problem gambling can develop gradually. Recognising the signs early makes it easier to get help. Common indicators include:

  • Spending more money or time gambling than you intended
  • Chasing losses by gambling more to try to win back money
  • Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
  • Neglecting work, studies, or family responsibilities
  • Lying to others about how much you gamble
  • Feeling anxious, irritable, or restless when trying to cut back
  • Gambling as a way to escape stress or emotional problems

If you recognise any of these patterns, reaching out for support is a positive step. You do not need to be in crisis to ask for help.

Self-Exclusion Options

Self-exclusion is a formal process that bars you from gambling at specific or all licensed venues. In South Africa, you can self-exclude through the NRGP, which coordinates with all provincial gambling boards to enforce the exclusion across licensed operators.

Most online casinos also offer their own self-exclusion tools in account settings. You can typically choose exclusion periods of 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years. During the exclusion period, you will not be able to access your account or create a new one.

Additional Support Services

Beyond the NRGP, several organisations provide support for people affected by gambling:

  • South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG): 011 234 4837. They offer support for the mental health issues that often accompany problem gambling.
  • Gamblers Anonymous South Africa: Peer support meetings where people share their experiences with gambling addiction in a safe, anonymous environment.
  • LifeLine South Africa: 0861 322 322. General crisis counselling that can help with gambling-related distress.

Supporting Someone Else

If you are concerned about a family member or friend's gambling, the NRGP helpline can advise you on how to approach the conversation and what support options are available. It is important not to enable the behaviour by lending money or covering up for the person. Encouraging them to contact a support service is one of the most helpful things you can do.

Remember, gambling problems can be overcome with the right support. Taking the first step to reach out is often the hardest part, but help is always available.
